SABIC, a company that began its journey in the
field of petrochemicals and plastics two decades ago, has now more
than 4 million tonnes capacity of commodity plastics at the various

SABIC has the entire range of PE products. HDPE
has the largest share while LDPE, the smallest. SABIC is expected
to increase this capacity further by almost another 1 million tonne,
possibly by the end of 2002. The newer capacities essentially would
be for LLDPE and HDPE. SABIC could therefore boast of a total capacity
of 5 million tonne by early 2003. Infact SABIC would have more than
4% share of the global polyolefin capacity.
During 2002, it acquired the Polyolefin business of DSM in the
Netherlands. With this acquisition SABIC has become the 3rd largest
global player in PP and the 4th largest player in PE. SABIC can
now play a significant role in the European Polyolefins business.
Infact with more than 3.25 million tonnes of commodity plastics
traded internationally (outside of middle east), SABIC has truly
become a leading global player of commodity plastics in general
and more significantly of Polyolefins.
